India Plans $75 Billion Refining and Petrochemical Expansion

India has announced a substantial $75 billion investment plan aimed at expanding its refining and petrochemical capacity across seven major projects. This ambitious initiative will encompass new refineries, capacity expansions, and integrated petrochemical complexes in various states, signaling a significant future supply boost.
The projects are expected to bring considerable new capacity in polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from 2027 to 2030. This expansion is poised to alleviate India's current reliance on imports and address domestic supply tightness, potentially exerting long-term downward pressure on resin prices.
Currently, India's polymer markets are experiencing a period of easing prices and tight supply. After a phase of rapid price increases, particularly in PE and PP, the market is witnessing a shift from panic buying to more cautious purchasing behavior. Prices have started to stabilize, with PE and PP raffia prices drifting lower, although supply remains constrained.
The planned expansion is expected to transform India's polymer market landscape by increasing domestic production capacity, which could lead to more stable pricing and reduced import dependency in the long term.
