Asia Petrochemical Market Faces Mixed Trends Amid Cost Pressures

The Asian petrochemical market is experiencing mixed trends following the recent China holiday, with demand expected to remain tepid. According to a report by ICIS, the market is grappling with volatile feedstock and freight costs, which are squeezing downstream margins. This has led to a complex pricing environment across different polymers.
In particular, Chinese exports of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) have increased, while polypropylene (PP) exports are contracting. The Indian n-butanol market is also under pressure from an influx of cargoes. In Pakistan, PP import prices have firmed, while polyethylene (PE) prices remain stable. PVC prices are supported by high production and freight costs, although they are capped by the availability of Chinese supplies.
Indian plastic manufacturers are facing significant margin pressures due to sharp rises in raw material costs. Input costs for these manufacturers surged by 50-60% in March 2026, driven by steep increases in the prices of key polymers such as PP, PVC, and PE. This price surge is attributed to turbulence in oil markets and supply concerns linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
The impact of rising polymer prices is being felt across various sectors, including fast-moving consumer goods, automotive, construction, and agriculture. As a result, manufacturers are compelled to raise prices of finished plastic products, with increases ranging from 20% to 100% depending on the product and market.
