India’s Reliance Oil-to-Chemicals FY Q2 Earnings Surge Amid Polymer Market Challenges

Reliance Industries reported a significant 68% increase in its oil-to-chemicals segment earnings for the fiscal second quarter, driven by improved margins. This comes amid a challenging environment for the Indian polymer market, where domestic demand fell by 3.5% year-on-year due to limited availability, supply disruptions, and elevated prices.
The polymer market in India is currently facing pressure from rising raw material costs, with the All India Plastics Manufacturers' Association (AIPMA) appealing for government intervention. The association has highlighted exponential price hikes in key polymers such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and polypropylene (PP), which are threatening the survival of many plastics processing plants. The AIPMA has also pointed out that domestic producers are exporting large quantities of raw materials, exacerbating the shortfall in the domestic market.
In response to these challenges, Indian producers have raised domestic polyethylene and PP prices, while the costs of finished plastic products have surged by 20% to 100% across various categories. The rising costs are impacting several sectors, including fast-moving consumer goods, automotive, construction, and agriculture, as these industries heavily rely on plastic-based inputs.
Despite these hurdles, Reliance's strong earnings performance underscores the company's ability to navigate the complex market dynamics, leveraging improved margins in its oil-to-chemicals operations.
