India's Polymer Market Holds Steady Amid Monsoon and Policy Changes

Monsoon Continues to Limit Demand
The ongoing monsoon season has slowed demand from key downstream industries such as construction, irrigation, and infrastructure. Although rainfall has been uneven this year, buyers continue to delay purchases as project activity typically slows during this period. Many converters are purchasing only for immediate requirements, keeping overall market activity subdued.
Higher Costs Offset Weak Consumption
Global crude oil and feedstock prices have strengthened in recent weeks due to geopolitical tensions, providing cost support to polymer markets. At the same time, India's restoration of the 7.5% Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on polymer imports has increased import costs, reducing the attractiveness of overseas cargoes. However, these supportive factors have not been enough to trigger a price rally because downstream demand remains weak.
Markets Stabilize After Months of Volatility
Following the sharp price surge seen earlier this year and the subsequent correction, import prices for major polymers have now entered a relatively stable phase. PP, PE, and PVC values have been moving within a narrow range in recent weeks as buyers avoid building inventories and wait for clearer market signals.
Trade Awaits Global Price Benchmarks
Market participants are now closely watching upcoming monthly price announcements from major overseas suppliers, particularly for PVC and polyolefins. These benchmark offers are expected to provide clearer direction for pricing in the Indian market. Until then, traders expect buying activity to remain cautious, with most transactions limited to immediate needs.
Overall, India’s polymer market is likely to remain balanced in the near term, as higher production costs continue to compete with sluggish monsoon demand and cautious purchasing behavior.
