Asia Polymer Markets Turn Cautious as Buyers Resist Fresh Price Rally

Asia Polymer Markets Turn Cautious as Buyers Resist Fresh Price Rally
Sentiment across Asia's polymer markets is becoming increasingly balanced as buyers adopt a cautious approach despite renewed price increases in PP, PE, and PVC. Although rising crude oil and feedstock costs, supported by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, continue to strengthen seller confidence, many market participants believe current price movements are being driven more by pricing strategies than by actual supply shortages.

Unlike the sharp buying rush witnessed earlier this year, converters and traders are showing little urgency to build inventories. Most buyers had already replenished stocks during late June and early July, allowing them to stay on the sidelines while waiting for clearer market direction.

Sellers tighten offers to support prices

Suppliers continue to justify higher offers by pointing to increased production costs, logistical uncertainty, and reduced regional availability. However, buyers increasingly believe that the limited number of offers is part of a deliberate strategy to strengthen market sentiment rather than evidence of widespread supply constraints.

This trend has also been observed in the PE market, where fewer US-origin offers are circulating despite no major indications of supply disruption. As a result, negotiations have become more difficult, with buyers and sellers holding different views on the true market situation.

PP remains firmer than PE in China

Within China, PP continues to show stronger fundamentals than PE due to comparatively tighter availability. PE supply remains relatively comfortable, making it harder for sellers to justify aggressive price increases without continued support from higher feedstock costs.

Across Southeast Asia, buyers have remained far calmer than during previous geopolitical disruptions. Many expect the current tensions to ease over time and believe crude oil prices could soften once the situation stabilizes, reducing the likelihood of chasing higher polymer prices.

Vietnam reflects this cautious approach well. Importers secured large volumes before the recent rally, with many shipments expected to arrive in August. These lower-cost cargoes are likely to help ease upward pressure on import prices, although prompt domestic availability remains relatively limited.

PVC market watches for August pricing

In the PVC market, attention is centered on the upcoming August price announcement from a major Taiwanese producer. With negotiations yet to begin, buyers remain reluctant to commit to fresh purchases.

China's domestic PVC market has strengthened slightly alongside firmer futures, while export offers have shown only limited increases. In India, the return of the 7.5% import duty, combined with weak monsoon demand, continues to limit the scope for significant import price increases.

Meanwhile, Southeast Asia has seen stronger momentum, with PVC import prices rising more noticeably than in China during the week.

Market Outlook

Despite firmer seller sentiment, buyers across Asia remain disciplined and selective. Market participants generally believe that future price direction will depend less on supply availability and more on whether higher feedstock costs can generate sustained demand and stronger purchasing activity.
