Asia Faces LNG Crunch as Gulf Disruptions Drive Prices Higher

Recent shipping data shows that LNG arrivals into Asia have fallen significantly, with average inflows slipping below key thresholds, reflecting a severe tightening in supply availability. The situation has been driven largely by disruptions in exports from major Gulf producers.
China, one of the largest LNG consumers in the region, is expected to see its lowest monthly imports in several years. With supplies from key Middle Eastern exporters constrained, Chinese buyers are increasingly relying on domestic production and pipeline gas to meet demand.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital transit route, remains heavily restricted, effectively limiting shipments from major LNG exporters in the region. At the same time, damage to critical production facilities has further reduced output, forcing suppliers to declare disruptions in contract deliveries and assess losses.
The impact on pricing has been significant, with LNG costs in Asia nearly doubling within a short period. Buyers in the region are now competing aggressively for limited spot cargoes, often outbidding European importers to secure supply.
Hopes for a quick recovery have faded amid continued geopolitical uncertainty and stalled negotiations. Ongoing instability around key shipping routes is delaying the return of normal supply flows, leaving the LNG market under sustained pressure.
As the situation evolves, Asia’s energy security remains under strain, with high prices and limited availability expected to persist in the near term.
