Crude Oil Climbs as Hormuz Shipping Talks Face Fresh Uncertainty

Brent crude for October delivery settled $3.04/barrel higher at $82.49 on Thursday, while September WTI advanced $2.07/barrel to $77.29. At the time of reporting, October Brent was trading at $83.16/barrel, up $0.67 (0.81%), while September WTI rose to $77.67/barrel, gaining $0.38 (0.49%).
Earlier optimism was driven by expectations that negotiations mediated by Oman could help restore normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. However, market sentiment shifted after reports indicated that Iran had proposed new transit conditions that would restrict the passage of vessels from the United States, Israel, and other countries it considers hostile. The proposal also reportedly includes financial penalties for violations and new transit charges for ships using the strategic waterway.
These developments have increased expectations that any reopening of the Strait of Hormuz could come with significant operating restrictions rather than a full return to unrestricted navigation. Market participants also noted that existing sanctions, insurance limitations, and geopolitical tensions could make any agreement difficult to implement.
As a result, uncertainty surrounding one of the world's most important oil shipping routes continues to support crude prices. Traders are expected to keep a close watch on further diplomatic developments, as any progress—or setback—in negotiations could have an immediate impact on global energy markets.
