The latest increases follow a firm pricing approach during September. The producer first raised September offers in late August and announced another round of increases on September 10, taking the total September hike to $20-70/ton depending on the destination.
Before the October announcement, market participants had largely expected a $30-50/ton increase, citing higher ethylene costs, rising freight rates and firm PVC conditions across Asia. However, cautious demand and increasing buyer resistance to expensive resin had already raised concerns about whether larger increases could be absorbed by the market.
Crude oil has also moved lower from last week’s peak after Brent briefly exceeded $108/bbl, easing some of the cost pressure behind expectations for a stronger October increase. While upstream costs remain elevated, the recent correction in oil prices combined with subdued buying interest in key Asian markets may have encouraged the producer to adopt a more moderate pricing approach.
