Mediterranean–China Freight Rates Rebound as Peak Season Tightens Capacity

The Mediterranean-to-China/East Asia route recorded the strongest weekly gain among the Suez trades, with rates rising 37% to $669 per 40-foot container. The market has recovered steadily after falling to its lowest point in mid-June, indicating that freight conditions are strengthening alongside the global peak shipping season.
Industry participants attribute the rebound mainly to robust cargo demand, which has encouraged shipping lines to shift capacity toward major east-west routes. This has reduced available space on secondary services, while ongoing congestion at several Asian and European ports has further tightened effective capacity and supported freight rates.
Sentiment has also improved following the gradual return of some shipping services to the Suez Canal, helping reduce transit times. However, uncertainty surrounding the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz continues to keep the shipping outlook cautious, with carriers closely monitoring regional developments before making broader routing changes.
