Indian Producers Implement Aggressive Polymer Price Hikes in November

Indian polymer producers have commenced November with substantial price hikes, particularly in the PVC segment, according to ChemOrbis. These increases are meeting resistance from converters, especially as the Diwali break approaches, and are juxtaposed against a recent 3% drop in crude oil prices. The hikes, effective from November 1, also encompass polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), although specific hike amounts were not disclosed.
The aggressive pricing strategy comes amid a backdrop of rising input costs for plastic manufacturers, which have surged by 50 to 60% earlier in the year. This has led to a significant increase in the prices of finished plastic products, impacting sectors such as FMCG, automotive, construction, and agriculture. The pressure on margins is particularly acute in industries heavily reliant on plastic components.
The broader market context includes a steep rally in naphtha prices in Europe and Asia, which have risen by 60-67% from their June lows, further complicating the cost landscape for producers. This rally is part of a larger trend of volatility in energy markets, influencing polymer prices globally.
