India's Polymer Market: Supply-Demand Imbalance and Price Dynamics

India's Polymer Market: Supply-Demand Imbalance and Price Dynamics

India's polymer market is currently facing significant challenges, particularly in the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sector. The country's annual PVC demand stands at approximately 4 million tons, while domestic production capacity is only 1.5 million tons, leading to a pronounced supply-demand mismatch. This gap is expected to widen as consumption continues to rise.

In the polyolefin markets, including polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), prices have begun to ease after a period of volatility. Previously, prices surged dramatically due to supply chain disruptions and panic buying. However, as the market transitions from panic to caution, prices have started to stabilize. PE prices have decreased from $1,600/tonne to about $1,300/tonne, and PP raffia prices have dropped to the mid-$1,200s.

Despite the easing of prices, the market remains tight, with logistics still strained and confidence not fully restored. The onset of the monsoon season is also contributing to softer demand, as construction activities slow down. Moreover, the rapid price increases earlier in the year have put pressure on converters, who struggle to pass on costs to end users, further tempering purchasing behavior.

India's reliance on imports to meet its polymer demand underscores the importance of addressing these supply challenges to stabilize the market.
