India's PE and PP markets surge as major producers implement fresh price hikes

In the latest revision, one of India's leading refiner and petrochemical producers increased HDPE prices by INR2,000/ton ($21/ton), while LDPE and LLDPE prices were raised by INR5,000/ton ($53/ton). At the same time, PP prices across all standard grades were increased uniformly by INR5,000/ton ($53/ton).
Major suppliers follow with coordinated revisions
Soon after the announcement, several state-owned and private producers across India also revised their domestic price lists upward. The synchronized price increases across major production hubs highlight a unified pricing approach among suppliers and establish a higher cost benchmark across the country's distribution network.
In addition to raising list prices, producers have tightened commercial terms by withdrawing temporary price protection schemes and reducing promotional incentives that had previously supported sales. Market participants also reported lower volume-based discounts and stricter credit terms, ensuring that the latest price increases are fully reflected throughout the supply chain.
Market shifts from stability to a strong recovery
India's domestic polyolefin market has witnessed a significant turnaround after remaining largely stable during May and June, when cautious buying, comfortable inventories and softer international prices kept the market under pressure.
During the first half of July, suppliers adopted mixed pricing strategies, including selective discounts and price rollovers, to stimulate demand during the seasonal monsoon slowdown. However, market sentiment changed rapidly after producers introduced the first round of PP and PE increases on July 23, followed by the larger revisions announced on July 27. The back-to-back hikes effectively ended nearly two months of price consolidation.
Higher feedstock costs and freight rates support the uptrend
The recent rally has been supported by rising upstream production costs. Higher naphtha, ethylene, and propylene prices have increased manufacturing costs for producers, making price recovery increasingly necessary to protect margins.
At the same time, elevated freight costs from key Asian export markets have kept imported material less competitive, allowing domestic producers to strengthen their pricing position without significant pressure from overseas supplies.
Traders build inventories while converters remain cautious
Market sentiment continues to differ across the supply chain. Traders and distributors have accelerated inventory purchases in anticipation of additional price increases, while downstream converters in the packaging, woven sack and molding sectors remain cautious due to rising raw material costs.
Many processors continue purchasing only according to immediate production requirements, as finished product prices have not increased at the same pace as resin costs. However, higher replacement costs are gradually forcing buyers to accept stronger price levels across the domestic market.
