India's PE and PP markets gain momentum after coordinated domestic price hikes

In the latest revision, one of India's leading refiner and petrochemical producers raised HDPE prices by INR2,000/ton ($21/ton), while LDPE and LLDPE prices increased by INR5,000/ton ($53/ton). At the same time, PP prices across all standard grades were also increased by INR5,000/ton ($53/ton).
Domestic producers move together
Following the initial announcement, several public and private petrochemical producers across the country quickly introduced similar price revisions. The coordinated action across major manufacturing regions has strengthened the domestic pricing structure and established a higher benchmark for PE and PP across India's key distribution markets.
Alongside higher prices, producers have also tightened commercial terms by withdrawing temporary price protection schemes and reducing promotional incentives that were previously offered to support sales. Market participants also reported lower volume-based discounts and stricter credit terms, ensuring that the latest price hikes are reflected throughout the supply chain.
Market reverses after months of stability
The latest rally marks a significant shift from the market conditions seen over the past two months. During May and June, domestic polyolefin prices remained largely stable to slightly weaker due to cautious buying, sufficient local inventories and softer international markets.
In early July, suppliers continued adopting mixed pricing strategies, including selective discounts and price rollovers, to stimulate demand during the seasonal monsoon slowdown. However, sentiment changed rapidly after producers implemented the first round of PP and PE price increases on July 23, followed by a much larger revision on July 27, effectively ending the prolonged period of market consolidation.
Higher costs continue to support prices
The recent upward movement has been driven primarily by rising upstream costs. Higher naphtha, ethylene, and propylene prices have increased production expenses for polymer manufacturers, making price recovery necessary to maintain operating margins.
In addition, elevated container freight rates from major Asian export hubs have reduced the competitiveness of imported material, allowing domestic producers to strengthen their pricing position without significant pressure from overseas cargoes.
Traders build stocks while converters remain cautious
Market activity continues to show contrasting trends across the supply chain. Traders and distributors have stepped up purchases to build inventories ahead of potential further price increases, while converters in the packaging, woven sack and molding sectors continue to face pressure from rising raw material costs.
Since finished product prices have not increased at the same pace as resin costs, many processors are limiting purchases to immediate production requirements. However, higher replacement costs are gradually pushing buyers to accept stronger price levels as the domestic PE and PP market continues its recovery.
