India Extends Petrochemical Import Duty Waiver Until July 15

India Extends Petrochemical Import Duty Waiver Until July 15
India’s Ministry of Finance has extended the temporary basic customs duty exemption on imported petrochemicals and primary polymers for another two weeks, pushing the deadline from June 30 to July 15, 2026. The move provides short-term relief to importers and processors while the market awaits clarity on the government’s longer-term trade policy.

The duty waiver was initially introduced in April to help offset the impact of supply disruptions and rising import costs linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The measure covers a wide range of petrochemical products, including key feedstocks, intermediates, and major polymer grades.

The latest extension is expected to benefit importers with cargoes already on the water, allowing shipments arriving in early July to continue enjoying duty-free access. This helps avoid a sudden increase in import costs and offers temporary support to buyers managing existing supply commitments.

Despite the extension, market participants view the short duration as a sign that the relief measure may be approaching its end. Many traders believe the government is providing a limited transition period rather than signaling a longer-term continuation of the exemption.

The uncertainty surrounding policy beyond July 15 has also kept buyers cautious. Several downstream processors and traders are limiting forward purchases until there is greater visibility on future import duties and market conditions.

Meanwhile, domestic producers continue to advocate for the restoration of import tariffs. Local suppliers argue that domestic production conditions have improved and that continued duty-free imports are increasing pressure on already weak market margins. Recent price reductions by domestic PVC producers have further highlighted the challenges faced by local manufacturers amid soft demand and ample supply.

As the new deadline approaches, market participants are expected to closely monitor government decisions, with pricing and purchasing strategies likely to remain cautious in the coming weeks.
