Global LNG Trade Hits Record High in 2025, Middle East Uncertainty Casts Shadow on 2026

Global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade reached an all-time high of 436.98 million tons in 2025, recording the strongest annual growth since 2022, according to the International Gas Union (IGU). Increased exports from the United States and a sharp rise in European imports helped offset weaker demand from several major Asian markets.

Europe emerged as a key driver of growth, with LNG imports rising by 26.1 million tons to 126.2 million tons as countries replenished gas storage and continued reducing reliance on Russian pipeline supplies. The United States retained its position as the world’s largest LNG exporter, shipping 110.74 million tons, followed by Qatar and Australia.

Despite the record volumes, the outlook for 2026 remains uncertain. The IGU noted that ongoing tensions in the Middle East have created risks for global LNG supply, affecting infrastructure, delaying future projects, and raising concerns over fuel availability and pricing.

Although Asia-Pacific remained the largest LNG-importing region, overall imports declined as lower purchases by China and India outweighed stronger demand from countries such as South Korea. The report also highlighted that elevated LNG prices could continue to restrict consumption growth in several emerging economies across South and Southeast Asia.
