US PVC Shipments Gain Ground in Vietnam as Trade Patterns Change

US PVC Imports Rise Sharply in 2025
Between 2022 and 2024, US PVC shipments to Vietnam remained below 100,000 tons annually, representing approximately 8–14% of the country’s total PVC imports. During this period, the US remained outside Vietnam’s top three suppliers, while regional producers played a more prominent role in meeting demand.
This changed significantly in 2025, when US PVC exports to Vietnam rose by around 240% year on year to approximately 310,000 tons. The increase gave the US about 29% of Vietnam’s PVC import market, placing it ahead of Taiwan, a traditional major supplier. China ranked second with a share exceeding 22%, while Taiwan fell to third place at nearly 21%. US shipments were particularly strong in September and December, reaching around 44,000 tons and 36,000 tons, respectively.
The surge established the US as a much more influential supplier in Vietnam. Greater availability of US-origin material expanded buyers’ sourcing options, diversified the country’s import base and intensified competition among international suppliers.
As US PVC became more prominent, its pricing and availability also gained importance in purchasing decisions alongside material from China, Taiwan and other origins. Vietnam increasingly served as a significant destination for US shipments as producers and traders looked for alternative markets for their material.
Global Trade Changes Redirect US PVC Shipments
Shifting international trade conditions were a major factor behind the increase in US PVC exports to Vietnam. Tariffs and trade tensions in 2025 restricted or complicated access to certain markets, narrowing some export opportunities for US producers and traders. At the same time, competitively priced Chinese PVC placed additional pressure on US suppliers in markets where buyers could source cheaper alternatives.
Under these conditions, Vietnam became an important destination capable of absorbing larger US volumes. Redirecting shipments to Vietnam and other markets helped US suppliers compensate for reduced access to some traditional outlets.
The additional supply also offered Vietnamese buyers greater flexibility in sourcing and potentially strengthened their negotiating position, particularly when price differences between origins were substantial.
China Takes the Lead, but US Supply Remains Strong
The US retained a significant share of Vietnam’s PVC import market in the first half of 2026, although China moved into first place. US shipments reached approximately 176,000 tons during the period, accounting for around 29% of Vietnam’s total PVC imports. China held a larger share of nearly 33%.
Despite losing the top position, US PVC imports still grew by approximately 27% compared with the first half of 2025. This suggests that the change in rankings reflected China’s faster expansion rather than a decline in US shipments.
The US has therefore maintained a substantially stronger position than it held before 2025, with its market share remaining close to 30%. US-origin PVC has become an important part of Vietnam’s import supply, and US suppliers continue to influence competition in the market, particularly when their offers remain competitive with Chinese and other Asian material.
