Freight Rate Update, July 6, 2026

Global container freight rates continued to rise during the week, supported by strong cargo demand, peak-season shipments, vessel space constraints, and worsening port congestion across key trade hubs. Freight markets remained firm on most major routes, with Asia-origin trades leading the gains.
The global container freight index increased by 8% week over week to $3,715 per 40-foot container, reflecting continued strength across international shipping markets.
Strong demand on major east-west trade lanes encouraged carriers to introduce additional rate hikes, peak-season surcharges, and higher freight charges. At the same time, congestion at several Asian and European ports reduced available vessel capacity, helping push rates higher.
Market sentiment also received support from improving shipping conditions in the Middle East. Vessel movements through the Strait of Hormuz continued to recover, while major carriers have started gradually restoring Suez Canal services on selected Asia-Europe routes. However, shipping companies remain cautious and continue monitoring security conditions in the region.
Looking ahead, freight rates are expected to remain elevated in the near term due to strong seasonal demand, limited vessel availability, and ongoing congestion. However, some market participants believe the current demand surge may ease later if shipments have been accelerated ahead of upcoming tariff and cost changes.
