Europe’s PS Market Stabilizes Ahead of August Holidays as Cost Pressure Returns

Although consumption has yet to recover, rising production costs are now providing stronger support to the market.
July Price Cuts Exceeded Feedstock Decline
Throughout July, PS prices continued to decline as suppliers offered discounts that went beyond the reduction in the monthly styrene contract.
Many producers were forced to grant additional price concessions to maintain sales amid sluggish demand and intense competition. Overall, market participants reported price reductions of €300–350/ton compared with June, with negotiations varying according to individual customer requirements.
Following these adjustments, most of the earlier price premium built up during the geopolitical rally has now been eliminated.
Higher Feedstock Costs Improve Market Sentiment
The market focus has now shifted toward rising upstream costs.
Although crude oil retreated after briefly crossing $100/barrel, it remains above late-June levels. At the same time, European spot styrene prices have climbed sharply, supported by stronger benzene values, tighter supply, and higher monomer prices.
As a result, the August styrene contract is widely expected to settle higher, encouraging producers to adopt a firmer pricing stance.
Weak Demand Limits Price Increases
Despite improving cost support, demand across Europe remains subdued.
Many processors are either preparing for the August holiday shutdown or have already reduced operations, while buyers continue purchasing only limited quantities to meet immediate production needs.
Most customers are carrying comfortable inventory levels and remain cautious about making fresh purchases until there is greater clarity on August pricing.
Post-Holiday Demand Will Be Key
Market participants generally believe the prolonged price correction has largely ended, reducing the likelihood of another major decline unless feedstock markets weaken significantly.
However, a meaningful recovery is still expected to depend on stronger downstream demand after businesses resume normal operations in September.
Until then, Europe's PS market is likely to remain supported by higher production costs, while weak seasonal demand continues to limit the scope for substantial price increases.
