China's H1 PE Exports Hit Record as H2 Outlook Takes Center Stage

China's H1 PE Exports Hit Record as H2 Outlook Takes Center Stage
China's polyethylene (PE) trade saw a major shift in the first half (H1) of 2026, with imports falling to their lowest H1 level in a decade while exports surged to a record high. The strong export performance was supported by geopolitical disruptions and expanding domestic production, but the key question now is whether this momentum can continue through the second half (H2) of the year.

H1 Imports Fall to a 10-Year Low

During H1 2026, China imported around 5.2 million tons of PE, down 28% from the same period last year. This was the country's weakest January–June import volume since 2016, reflecting the growing impact of expanding domestic production and reduced dependence on overseas suppliers.

Record H1 Exports Highlight China's Growing Role

China exported more than 1.8 million tons of PE in H1 2026, a 255% increase from a year earlier. This six-month total has already exceeded the country's entire PE export volume for 2025, demonstrating how rapidly Chinese producers have expanded their presence in regional markets.

Although exports eased in June after exceptionally strong shipments in April and May, they remained well above last year's levels, indicating that China's export competitiveness extends beyond temporary supply disruptions.

Southeast Asia Remains the Key Market

Vietnam emerged as China's largest PE export destination during H1, followed by Indonesia and Malaysia. Demand from Southeast Asia strengthened as buyers looked for reliable supplies amid disruptions affecting traditional exporters.

China's Import Dependence Continues to Shrink

The gap between China's PE imports and exports narrowed significantly during the first half of the year, showing the country's growing self-sufficiency. Rising domestic output is steadily replacing imported material while allowing more surplus volumes to enter export markets.

Can the Export Boom Continue in H2?

The focus now shifts to H2 2026. Continued geopolitical uncertainty, elevated freight costs, and additional domestic production capacity could keep Chinese exports competitive. However, if Middle Eastern supply normalizes further and freight pressures ease, export growth may slow from the exceptional pace recorded in H1.

Even so, China's expanding production capacity and stronger export network suggest it will remain an increasingly influential supplier in Asia's PE market throughout the remainder of the year.
