China’s ABS Exports Surge in H1 2026 as Import Reliance Continues to Decline

Imports Fall to Record Low
During January–June 2026, China imported around 372,000 tons of ABS, marking the lowest first-half import volume since records began in 2000. The value of these imports also declined to approximately $554.5 million, down from $611.8 million in the same period last year.
The decline reflects a long-term trend driven by the rapid expansion of China's domestic ABS production capacity. Since 2019, import volumes have steadily decreased as new production facilities have come online, reducing the country's dependence on overseas suppliers.
Several large-scale projects, including new plants from major domestic and international producers, have significantly increased local manufacturing capacity. Additional projects currently under development are expected to further strengthen domestic supply in the coming years.
Exports Reach a New High
While imports continued to fall, China's ABS exports climbed to a record level during the first half of 2026.
The country exported nearly 280,000 tons, representing a 76% increase compared to the same period last year. Export earnings also rose sharply to around $476.8 million, supported by higher shipment volumes and stronger prices.
Vietnam remained the largest export destination, accounting for 36% of total shipments. It was followed by Thailand (10%), Indonesia (5%), Brazil (5%), and Malaysia (4%), reflecting China's growing presence across both Asian and international markets.
Trade Gap Continues to Narrow
Although China remains a net importer of ABS, the difference between imports and exports is shrinking rapidly.
Based on current trade trends, full-year ABS imports are projected to reach around 740,000 tons, while exports could approach 560,000 tons if the current pace continues.
This would reduce the gap between imports and exports to roughly 180,000 tons, the smallest on record.
The latest trade figures indicate that China's expanding production capacity is steadily reshaping the regional ABS market. As domestic output continues to grow, Chinese suppliers are expected to play an increasingly important role in global ABS trade while further reducing the country's dependence on imported material.
