Asian PET Bottle Markets End 2025 Firm on Cost Support, Demand Still Weak

China Leads Price Gains; South Korean Exports Steady
China led the regional rebound, with both domestic and export PET prices rising by up to $30/ton on a weekly basis. These gains lifted import prices to three-month highs, while domestic price midpoints reached their strongest levels since early October, according to ChemOrbis Price Index data. Despite firmer prices, buying activity remained muted as demand failed to keep pace.
In Southeast Asia, import PET prices edged higher in line with stronger Chinese offers, though trading activity stayed thin. Meanwhile, South Korean export offers were largely rolled over, reflecting a cautious stance amid rising costs and weak demand.
Upstream Strength Drives Market
Upstream markets played a central role in supporting PET prices. Crude oil stabilized at higher levels, lifting key feedstocks including PX, PTA, and MEG. Brent crude futures surged nearly 6% during the week ending December 26, reclaiming the $60/bbl mark. Spot PX rose $25/ton to $860/ton, PTA increased $15/ton to $625/ton, and MEG gained $10/ton to $450/ton, all on a CFR China basis.
Demand Recovery Remains Elusive
Despite cost support, demand across Asia remained uneven. Buyers in China and Southeast Asia responded cautiously, while demand was reported to be relatively stronger in India. Market participants cautioned that without a clear recovery in consumption, PET prices may struggle to sustain further upside.
