Asian PET Bottle Market Loses Momentum as Costs Ease

The shift has increased expectations among buyers that prices could see further corrections, particularly as demand remains weak and converters continue to face tight margins. However, production constraints in China are limiting the downside, keeping the market balanced between lower costs and restricted availability.
Falling Feedstock Costs End PET Rally
The main change this week came from upstream markets, with crude oil retreating sharply after its recent rise. Key PET feedstocks, including PX, PTA and MEG, also moved lower.
The decline in feedstock values reduced the cost pressure that had supported PET bottle prices during the previous three weeks. As a result, buyers became more cautious about making fresh purchases at current levels, expecting lower production costs to eventually lead to additional resin price reductions.
Chinese PET bottle export prices consequently slipped from their recent multi-month highs, while domestic prices also recorded their first declines after three consecutive weeks of increases.
Chinese Supply Constraints Limit Downside
Despite the weaker cost environment, Chinese producers have not moved toward aggressive price cuts.
Several PET bottle plants are still operating at reduced rates, keeping spot availability relatively tight. This has allowed producers to maintain greater control over offers and has limited the scale of the correction despite generally weak demand.
Export demand has also remained subdued. High resin prices and elevated freight costs continue to discourage overseas buyers, while the latest feedstock declines have encouraged customers to wait for potentially better purchasing opportunities.
Some Chinese exporters remain relatively positive about the medium-term market, noting that restricted supply could provide support for another price increase if crude oil and feedstock values recover.
South Korean Prices Hold Despite Lower Costs
South Korean PET bottle export prices stabilized this week following three consecutive weeks of increases. Producers have shown limited willingness to immediately reflect the recent decline in upstream costs in their resin offers.
Suppliers pointed out that feedstock prices remain at elevated levels despite the latest correction. Continued uncertainty in energy markets has also encouraged producers to adopt a cautious pricing approach.
Meanwhile, South Korean and Taiwanese producers continue to focus more heavily on the US market than Asian destinations, reducing the pressure to compete aggressively for regional demand.
Chinese Offers Put Pressure on Southeast Asia
Southeast Asian PET bottle import markets also shifted toward stable-to-softer conditions, with lower Chinese offers weighing particularly on the lower end of the regional price range.
Buying activity remained limited, with converters largely purchasing only for immediate requirements. Many continued to favor local material because of lower logistical risks and, in some cases, more competitive economics compared with imported cargoes.
The decline in Chinese offers has strengthened expectations of further price corrections, giving buyers little incentive to build inventories beyond their immediate needs.
