Oil Prices Decline as OPEC Plans Production Increase

The decline comes after a brief rally on Friday, which failed to reverse last week’s losses. OPEC+ announced plans to begin unwinding a 2.2 million barrel per day (bpd) production cut in April, with Saudi Arabia, Russia, and other major oil producers set to add approximately 138,000 bpd. Analysts suggest this move is partly aimed at addressing U.S. concerns over high oil prices.
Market experts remain cautious about the impact of the production increase. UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo noted that traders fear it could lead to a series of monthly supply hikes. However, OPEC+ has stated that any increase will be adjusted based on market conditions.
Adding to market uncertainty, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak indicated that OPEC+ could reverse its decision if the market becomes oversupplied. Analysts at Standard Chartered predict that despite the supply increase, a major surplus is unlikely, with only a mild excess expected in late 2025 and 2026.
Meanwhile, U.S. oil production growth has slowed significantly, with crude output increasing by just 274,000 bpd in 2024 compared to 942,000 bpd in 2023. Forecasts suggest a further slowdown, with an increase of only 231,000 bpd in 2025 and 66,000 bpd in 2026.
With ongoing market volatility, traders will be closely watching OPEC’s next moves and global economic trends to gauge future oil price movements.
