Major Fire at Dow’s Freeport Facility Shuts Down Key Polyethylene Units, Disrupts U.S. and Global Supply

The Freeport complex, sprawling across 7,000 acres, also manufactures 44% of Dow’s products sold in the U.S. and 21% of its global product output, according to company disclosures.
Explosion Reported, Fire Contained Without Injuries
The fire broke out around 7:00 p.m. CDT on October 6, in Plant B — one of the site’s critical production hubs. Nearby residents reported hearing a loud explosion, followed by a large plume of smoke. Emergency crews quickly responded, and Dow reported the fire was fully contained by 11:15 p.m., with no injuries or fatalities.
Dow described the cause as a “facility upset,” leading to process disruptions and failure of the facility’s flare systems, which are designed to safely burn off gases during emergencies.
Three Polyethylene Lines Offline — Including 1.3 Billion-Pound Unit
Dow has shut down three major PE production lines at the site, including a newly commissioned unit with a nameplate capacity of 1.3 billion pounds per year that came online in June 2025. The unit is part of Dow’s global growth strategy for packaging and consumer goods markets, offering high-performance polyethylene resins for film, molding, and extrusion.
This shutdown represents a substantial loss of capacity for both domestic and international markets, as the Freeport site is one of the largest integrated petrochemical complexes in the Western Hemisphere.
Massive Market Impact
50% of U.S. polyethylene originates from this facility
20% of global PE supply is impacted
The site produces 44% of Dow’s U.S. output and 21% of Dow’s global products
Analysts expect this disruption to ripple across the value chain. Spot prices for polyethylene resins (LDPE, LLDPE, and HDPE) are already climbing as buyers anticipate tightening supply.
“Freeport is the heart of Dow’s production network,” said a senior petrochemical analyst at Plastics Benchmark Weekly. “A prolonged shutdown could severely impact supply chains in packaging, food storage, medical, and construction sectors.”
