Hormuz Shipping Disruptions Intensify as Tankers Operate in 'Dark Mode'

According to shipping data, tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz dropped sharply over the weekend, with only a handful of vessels completing the passage. Most of these ships reportedly traveled with their Automatic Identification System (AIS) turned off, making their movements difficult to track.
This marks a significant shift from the previous weeks, when tanker and LNG traffic had gradually recovered and vessels were largely operating with tracking systems active. The renewed security concerns have led many operators to once again adopt "dark mode" transits to reduce their visibility while crossing the region.
Shipping activity remained extremely limited at the start of the week, with very few visible vessel movements through the Strait. Maritime observers also noted changes in the routes used by tankers, as operators reassessed navigation options in response to the evolving security situation.
Adding to market concerns, Qatar has temporarily suspended all maritime vessel operations until further notice following the latest escalation. The decision could affect LNG shipments from the country's Ras Laffan export facilities, where export flows had only recently begun recovering.
The latest developments have renewed concerns over global energy supply chains, as the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most critical routes for crude oil and LNG exports.
