China’s Rising PP Exports Reshape Asia’s Polymer Trade

Production Growth Outpaces Domestic Demand
Over the past few years, China has added massive PP production capacity, while domestic consumption has grown at a much slower pace. Weakness in the property sector, cautious consumer spending, and slower manufacturing activity have reduced the pace of polymer demand growth, leaving producers with increasing surplus volumes.
With more than 20 million tons/year of new capacity added between 2021 and 2025, and another 10 million tons/year expected during 2026-2027, exports are becoming an essential outlet rather than an optional sales channel.
Flexible Feedstocks Strengthen Competitiveness
China's producers benefit from a diverse production base that includes naphtha, coal-to-olefins (CTO), methanol-to-olefins (MTO), and propane dehydrogenation (PDH) technologies. This flexibility allows manufacturers to better manage feedstock costs and adapt to changing market conditions, improving their competitiveness in export markets.
Middle East Disruptions Accelerated the Shift
Supply interruptions from traditional Middle Eastern exporters during the second quarter of 2026 created opportunities for Chinese suppliers to expand overseas shipments. However, the continued strength in exports even after Middle Eastern supplies began recovering suggests China's export growth is supported by structural advantages rather than temporary market disruptions.
Chinese producers have also strengthened their logistics networks and customer relationships, allowing them to respond quickly whenever regional supply gaps emerge.
Competition Across Asia Is Intensifying
As China exports more material, traditional suppliers from South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and the Middle East are facing growing competition. These exporters are no longer only competing for China's domestic market—they are increasingly competing directly with Chinese cargoes in third-country markets.
This has reshaped regional trade dynamics, with suppliers now fighting for market share across Asia instead of relying on China as their primary destination.
Southeast Asia and India Become Key Markets
Countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand have become important destinations for China's expanding PP exports due to their continued dependence on imported resin and their proximity to Chinese suppliers.
India is also emerging as a strategically important market. Chinese shipments increased significantly as buyers sought alternative sources during disruptions affecting Gulf suppliers, demonstrating China's growing ability to compete in markets traditionally dominated by Middle Eastern producers.
A Lasting Change in Asia's PP Market
China is steadily transitioning from being the world's largest PP importer to becoming one of Asia's most influential exporters. With substantial new production capacity still scheduled to come online over the next two years, the country's export surplus is expected to continue growing.
This structural shift is likely to reshape regional PP trade, intensify competition among global suppliers, and play a major role in determining pricing and supply patterns across Asia in the years ahead.
