Indian PE Producers Raise Prices Again as Margins Remain Under Pressure

The latest revisions, effective August 20, indicate a gradual upward movement rather than a sharp price surge. Major domestic producers increased selected LDPE grades, particularly those used for milk packaging and extrusion coating, by INR3,000/ton ($31/ton).
LLDPE film grades saw comparatively smaller increases of INR1,000/ton ($10/ton) on the price lists of major producers. Meanwhile, HDPE and PP prices remained unchanged, offering some stability to rigid packaging and molding applications, while flexible packaging converters continue to face higher resin costs.
Although an increase of INR1,000-3,000/ton may appear limited individually, converters are becoming increasingly concerned as these repeated revisions continue to add to earlier increases. Small and medium-sized packaging manufacturers, already operating on very thin margins, are finding it increasingly difficult to absorb the cumulative impact. Each successive increase raises working capital requirements and adds to overall operating costs.
Downstream Industry Faces Growing Cost Pressure
As primary producers revise prices in response to changing feedstock costs and tighter spot availability, downstream manufacturers are facing increasing pressure to transfer higher resin costs further along the supply chain to consumer-goods producers and packaging buyers.
Market participants noted that converters have limited ability to continue absorbing repeated increases without eventually adjusting production levels or finished-product prices. If raw material costs remain high, some processors may choose to reduce operating rates instead of taking on additional working-capital pressure.
Smaller manufacturers without long-term supply arrangements remain particularly vulnerable to frequent price changes. Until resin and feedstock markets become more stable, the latest PE increases are expected to keep packaging costs under pressure across various consumer goods.
