MSC introduces Europe–Middle East route avoiding Hormuz amid ongoing shipping disruptions

MSC introduces Europe–Middle East route avoiding Hormuz amid ongoing shipping disruptions
MSC Mediterranean Shipping is set to roll out a new logistics service connecting Europe to the Middle East while avoiding the Strait of Hormuz, as regional tensions continue to disrupt normal maritime operations.

The new service is expected to commence on May 10, starting from Antwerp and covering multiple European ports before reaching Saudi Arabia via the Suez Canal. Instead of continuing through Hormuz, shipments will be discharged at Red Sea ports such as Jeddah and King Abdullah.

From there, cargo will be transported inland across Saudi Arabia by road to Dammam on the Gulf coast. Once at Dammam, smaller feeder vessels will distribute shipments to key regional destinations, including Abu Dhabi, Jebel Ali, Bahrain, Iraq, and Kuwait.

This alternative route reflects a broader shift in shipping strategies, as companies look for ways to sustain trade flows despite restricted access through Hormuz. While the multimodal approach introduces higher costs, longer transit durations, and additional operational complexity, it provides a workable solution to keep cargo moving across the region.

The move highlights how prolonged geopolitical tensions are reshaping global logistics networks, with increasing reliance on landbridge solutions to bypass critical chokepoints.
