BASF Opens Advanced Refinery Catalyst R&D Center in Georgia

According to a company press release, BASF has officially opened a new research and development center dedicated to refinery catalyst innovation at its Attapulgus site in Georgia, which is also home to the company’s largest refinery catalyst production facility globally.

The new center is designed to strengthen coordination between R&D, process engineering, and operational teams, helping accelerate innovation and improve the scale-up process for advanced catalyst technologies.

The facility includes modern analytical laboratories and quality assurance systems that will support product development activities as well as Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) testing.

BASF stated that integrating research activities directly with production operations will help the company develop solutions more closely aligned with real-world refining and manufacturing needs.

Company officials added that the site combines technical expertise with digital technologies to improve refinery performance, increase product yields, and deliver greater value to customers.

FCC remains one of the most important refining processes globally, converting heavy oils and alternative feedstocks into lighter and higher-value products such as gasoline, LPG, and olefins while improving overall energy efficiency and supporting the use of lower-carbon feedstocks.
