India Prepares for Potential Return of Iranian Crude Supplies

India’s state-run refiners have begun preliminary discussions with traders handling Iranian crude oil as they assess the possibility of a further easing of US sanctions after August. Market sources indicated that the talks are focused on securing future supply options rather than arranging immediate purchases, as most refiners have already covered their crude requirements through August.
Despite renewed interest in Iranian barrels, buying decisions will largely depend on pricing. Russian crude continues to remain highly competitive for Indian refiners, while recent declines in Middle Eastern crude prices have narrowed the cost advantage that Iranian supplies previously enjoyed.
Competition among suppliers has also intensified following Saudi Arabia’s latest reductions in official selling prices. However, refiners reportedly still view Russian grades as more economical due to favorable freight economics and overall delivered costs.
As refiners start negotiating September cargoes, some may keep procurement flexibility in case progress in US-Iran discussions creates opportunities for Iranian oil to re-enter the Indian market. Iran was once a key crude supplier to India before sanctions sharply curtailed trade, and both countries have recently shown interest in strengthening energy ties.
