India Polymer Markets: Easing Prices Amid Tight Supply and Disruptions

The Indian polymer market is currently navigating a complex landscape characterized by easing prices, tight supply, and unexpected disruptions. Recent reports indicate that polyethylene (PE) prices have decreased from approximately $1,600 per tonne to around $1,300 per tonne, while polypropylene (PP) raffia prices have slipped to the mid-$1,200s.
These price reductions are largely attributed to a shift in buying behavior among processors and traders, who have adopted a more cautious approach. This shift comes in response to the easing of initial market urgency, with buyers focusing on immediate needs rather than long-term coverage. Consequently, this change in sentiment has contributed to the observed decline in polymer prices.
Despite the easing of prices, the supply situation remains tight. Disruptions in the Middle East, plant shutdowns, and logistics issues have significantly impacted the availability of polymers. Additionally, the monsoon season and converter margin pressure have further influenced demand, reducing it by up to 20% at its peak.
Moreover, the tightness in LPG feedstock has compounded supply constraints, while regulatory factors concerning environmental compliance continue to shape the market dynamics. As the Indian polymer market evolves, industry stakeholders must remain vigilant and adaptable to these changing conditions.
