India's PE, PP Markets Resilient Amid LPG Mandate and Monsoon

India's PE, PP Markets Resilient Amid LPG Mandate and Monsoon

India's polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) markets are showing resilience against the usual monsoon season slowdown. This unexpected market stability is largely attributed to a government mandate prioritizing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production, which has tightened feedstock supply for petrochemicals.

The Indian government's directive requires refineries to divert C3 and C4 streams, such as propane and butane, towards LPG production. This move aims to secure domestic LPG supply but has resulted in reduced propylene output, creating a tighter feedstock situation for the petrochemical sector. Consequently, this has supported PE and PP prices despite the traditional seasonal demand dip.

In response to the tightening supply and to stimulate demand, Indian PP producers have introduced price guarantees. These guarantees are designed to stabilize the market by offering buyers credit if prices fall, while maintaining current prices if they rise. This strategy is intended to boost buyer confidence and ease inventory pressures.

However, the LPG shortage is also impacting downstream demand. Converters are adopting cautious purchasing strategies, reducing polymer purchases due to rising prices and gas shortages affecting the food industry, a major consumer of packaging materials.
