MDI Prices Surge Globally Amid Overseas Plant Disruptions; Domestic Market Remains Stable

Unplanned outages and scheduled maintenance have significantly impacted MDI production facilities in various overseas regions. Major international producers such as BASF, Covestro, and Huntsman have responded by issuing price hike notifications, leading to a notable increase in MDI quotes across Europe, the Americas, and Japan.
In contrast, the domestic market in India, supported by strong production capacity and flexible export mechanisms, has experienced a different trend. As of June 5, price for polymeric MDI was 16,233.33 RMB/ton, reflecting a 5.8% decrease from the start of the month. This has resulted in a market characterized by strong overseas prices and weak domestic prices.
The disruptions in overseas production were caused by unexpected outages and supply interruptions for key feedstocks like carbon monoxide and chlorine, particularly in North America. Rising costs for upstream raw materials have further exacerbated production expenses. Consequently, international manufacturers have raised their product quotes, with North American prices increasing by $0.22 to $0.35 per pound and Japanese prices rising by over $500 per ton.
